What can I say that I don't
say for every vintage?
The Dutton
Ranch fruit is A+. Perfectly located and perfectly farmed.
We get our two favorite blocks each year. Both are even more
costal than any of our own vineyards.
In 2001 these were the last grapes we
picked, which is unusual for most wineries. Most of the time
the whites ripen long before the Cabernet. The super-long
hang time from the cool foggy mornings creates amazing
complexity of both fruit and spice. We follow very
traditional Burgundian techniques in the winery, but the
wine is still very signature "California" in its' fruit
profile...it's massive!
There is pineapple, citrus, and great
floral notes. As always, we strive for warm, subtle, toasty
nuances, but never that brash "oaky" finish, the balance we
always talk about. The wine is full and around in the mouth,
with just the right crispness to carry the smooth finish.
Last vintage was a featured "Wine of the Week" in the
New York Times.
Only 300 cases produced. |
