At Davis Family Vineyards, we have some pretty strong beliefs about wine. We believe wine is an essential element in a rich and passionate life. It adds an extra layer of flavors to both meals and to friendships. And like a lover, wine has a sensuality of perfumed aromas and silky, supple textures—endless charm and character that brings many pleasures to our senses and our spirits!

Our Focus is in the Vineyards
Wine should be a natural expression of a specific place—the personality of a particular, carefully tended plot of earth that reveals the mood of Mother Nature in an individual year. This means special attention is given to everything. Vineyard locations must have perfect soil, exposures to the sun, and microclimates for world-class wine growing. Varietals must match ideally with each individual site, and then special attention is paid to selection of clones and rootstalk. Whether in our own vineyards or in those of neighbors from which we purchase grapes, we carefully tend the vines using the latest in trellis and irrigation techniques that give us healthy, balanced grapevines, small but even grape clusters, and ultimately expressive, concentrated wines. All this is done while trying to ward off every weed, pest, fungus and virus known to plant kind in the most organic fashion possible. Then above all, we harvest at ripeness…that perfect balance of sugar, acidity, pH and, most importantly, maturity of flavors and tannins.

Winemaking With a Clear Vision
In the winery we perform a balancing act that involves closely monitoring every detail while trying to intervene as little as possible in bringing forth the flavors of the vineyard. We believe winemaking is an art. We use tradition, technology and science to advance our art. I began my artisan winemaking career in the late 80’s working in the vineyards and winery at Sky Vineyards at the top of the Mayacamas Mountains. I have lustfully furthered my knowledge and craft by working with some of the best producers in California, and France, as well as Argentina and New Zealand, two regions from which I continue to make a wine each year under our "Gusto" label. Add to that 10 years of continuing education at UC Davis and in our own Russian River Vineyards, and we arrive at our current quest for palatial perfection…wines literally crafted by hand, and only in small lots. We age our wines in the finest French oak barrels, just enough to help the wines evolve and to add a subtle seasoning component.
Our aim is to find that magical balance between winemaking expression and respect for nature’s gifts. It’s a style that lets us pour our hearts and soul into each bottle and wins us friends one glass at a time. We wouldn’t have it any other way.
